Additionally, biohazards can be broken down into the four categories listed below:

BSL-1: Although these varieties of biohazardous materials aren’t inherently dangerous, they can cause mild illness and discomfort. Situations like food poisoning and respiratory issues are commonly experienced as a result of exposure to BSL-1 contaminants.

BSL-2: The microbes pose a moderate threat to those exposed to them. Infections like Strep and Staph fall under the BSL-2 category.

BSL-3: These contaminants are dangerous to anyone exposed and could result in illness or fatality. Unfortunately, these are the most common materials found in biohazard-related scenes. This is just one of the many reasons to bring in professionals in the event of biohazard contamination.

BSL-4: The likelihood of interacting with contaminants at this level is incredibly unlikely. Common forms of BSL-4 microbes are Ebola and other worldwide diseases. Even so, you can never be too cautious when dealing with a biohazardous scene and should never enter the area yourself.
